Satanism:
Lest I appear superstitious, let me define Satan as “the adversary.” If you care to think of Satan as a conscious entity outside of normal rational law, and that entity has set out deliberately to destroy everything you cherish, everything you work for and every thing you hold dear I shall not quarrel with you, although I remain skeptical. On the other hand if you take the opposite notion that Satan is safe to deal with, either not existing, intrinsically harmless or subject to your control, then I would caution you. We could both be wrong, however unlikely that seems.
I have a good friend who likes to say, “The devil’s greatest achievement was to convince most people that he does not exist.” Consider: matter is interchangeable with energy, which is interchangeable with information. It seems to me (always hold in mind I could be wrong) that there is a progression of abstraction in this sequence. And if we were to look for something more abstract than information, of course we would think of abstract reasoning, a mystery which I for one cannot fathom, but I believe it exists. Beyond this there is some sort of social order; we have notions of right and wrong. Those cannot exist without abstract reasoning, while the opposite is obviously not true. After listing five things in ascending order of abstraction, it seems reasonable to ask if there is another. I can prove none, but as I look about me I seem to see that people see a spiritual element in life. This they hold supremely dear and are guided by to hazard of their very lives; sometimes this element leads them to terribly anti-social acts, which is why your luggage is searched at airports. So I must suspect it.
Everything ponderable disintegrates over time, we grow old and die, energy is dispersed information is scrambled, scientific laws are constantly being challenged and often modified, the consensus of social order and moral rule becomes contestable. These things can all be described as the activity of an adversary, who looks like it is doing what the adversary does; whether you think that is blind or purposeful makes no great difference to me. Running those processes in reverse, you notice that things build up in every level of abstraction. That leaves you with the possibility of an ancient spiritual entity that has been doing bad things to us for a long time.
So I believe, with a high degree of certainty, that prancing around making gestures or uttering words intended to empower such a being is quite safe. On the other hand, it would be the utmost folly. There is everything to lose, and I used to say nothing to gain. I would make note of the fact that those who dabbled in the occult were exceedingly low status and snigger at the notion that they had any power at all.
I may have to change my thinking. Here are some hand gestures I pulled off the internet with a few minutes’ effort:

Now it seems to me that some of these are actually rather innocent.
After all, you do things with your hands, hailing with an open hand, blessing with a cupped hand, indicating with an index finger and bidding defiance (or punching a snout) with a closed fist or grasping (a small object or an idea) with thumb against index finger. But some gestures seem to be no part of a wholesome, creative and supporting existence.
Those are the ones that give me the creeps.
So here are some people whom you might recognize and might love intensely or hate; these are powerful people:
The final picture is of Donald Trump. You might cry fowl (and clench a fist), and say he is being coached. It is the instructor who is putting energy into it. Trump is just grinning because it’s stupid. Or maybe that’s cover up. And I invite you to dismiss it all. But it seems to me that such gestures are made, and they imply a degree of stupid folly hard for me to fathom.
I have mentioned this to a friend, who said disdainfully that those gestures only imply music. I don’t see any musical instruments. Nor am I able to imagine playing one in such a position. Besides, if by some rotten chance that entity exists, music is a standard way by which it is traditionally invoked.
I should have let this distasteful matter lie, but the other day it was thrust into my face by my standard crutch Google. They held a competition for the Google doodle. Now I am content to believe that the artists and judges were guided by artistic merit and political correctness and nothing else. There is a row of eight young looking people, one with a cane holds one flank and one in a wheelchair holds the other. Between are six, all hugging but whose body language suggests that they are three couple, each of widely different background and in an affectionate mood. These people are NOT marrying cousins. Of course you don’t have to go so far in order to wipe out fertility. A couple thousand mating at random will go extinct, the ultimate victory of the adversary.
Now behold the background. There is a crowd of about the same size back there, some gesturing. Somebody is making a heart, and I think that’s kind of sweet. The five other gestures are ones we have just looked at.
It seems to me a remarkable coincidence that the sign of the adversary is being used to celebrate the mechanism.
